Lessons Learned Beyond Beauty School

About the Event
Many people in our communities struggle with sobriety. Being sober involves more than simply saying no to drugs and alcohol. It is an ongoing commitment a person makes that requires constant effort to maintain a substance-free life, which can be more than difficult at times.
Many people struggling to remain sober often need support from loved ones and others. Bellus Academy is proud to partake in that initiative by celebrating the beauty of a clean start. Recently, students and staff donated their time and services to recognize and praise six San Diego area women who completed their alcohol and drug treatment programs. The women showed off their new mindset as they strutted as models in the Salvation Army Fashion Show at the Kroc Center.
Behind the scenes, Bellus Academy students performed hairstyling and makeup artistry under instructor supervision to help the women feel confident and beautiful as they took their turns on the catwalk.
Roxana Lopez, a cosmetology educator at Bellus Academy, looks back on the event fondly. “It was a privilege to celebrate the strength of these women and watch them shine in the spotlight. Achieving sobriety is a blend of grit and grace and the Salvation Army Fashion Show allowed Bellus Academy students to give the gift of some pampering and glamour to these gritty, gracious survivors!”

In addition to providing complimentary hair, makeup, and nail services at non-profit events like the Salvation Army Fashion Show, we’ve also offered free haircuts for people experiencing homelessness. These hands-on opportunities are intended to bring students and the community together for an event centered around the impact of well-being and supporting those in need.
