How an Education in Cosmetology can Open Career Doors

October 7, 2016

Bellus Academy offers an extensive education in cosmetology at all of our locations. While many people think that cosmetology programs make you “just a hair stylist” that is simply not true. If you are a licensed cosmetologist, you have several opportunities to hold all types of jobs. Here are a few career opportunities that you might not have realized are available to talented cosmetologists.

Fashion Show Hair Stylist or Makeup Artist

Hair stylists and makeup artists work with a creative group that, together, creates the overall look of the people on the runway. They work with fashion consultants, photographers, designers and models; like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner. This job is one of the fastest growing in the beauty industry.

Fashion Week is hosted in several high-end places like New York and Paris. Fashion hair stylists and makeup artists have the opportunity to travel to amazing places and work with world-famous models, and award-winning designers.

Bellus Academy students get the opportunity to work behind-the-scenes, creating hair and makeup for Fashion Week San Diego and Fashion Week Kansas City.

Celebrity/Personality Hair Stylist or Makeup Artist

Have you ever dreamed of working with your favorite celeb? That can be a possibility with a career in cosmetology. Celebrities and pop icons work with hair and makeup artists on almost a daily basis. You can work as a personal artist for someone, or you can work on the set of a TV show or movie. Some famous personal stylists and artists are:

Gucci Westman: this talented woman is the makeup artist to stars like Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore. She has also been serving as Revlon’s creative director since 2008.

Charlotte Tillbury: Charlotte is the makeup artist to global icons Cara Delevingne, Sienna Miller and Kate Moss.

Tom Pecheux: he is responsible for all those glowing Victoria’s Secret models. He is also the makeup director of Estee Lauder.

Artistic Director for a Salon or Brand

After years of hard work and dedication, very few talented cosmetologists climb the ladder to the highly-respected position of Artistic Director. They can oversee personnel, budget, creative projects and brand awareness. Depending on the type of company, Artistic Directors may have part in PR.

Salon Owner

If you’ve always been a leader, innovator and beauty lover, you could own your own salon. Along with talent and hard work, it is possible for a cosmetologist to own a salon or spa that they run. Owners typically have control of hiring, brand management, personnel and budgeting, among other things.

There are several other types of jobs that a cosmetologist can hold such as:
Nail technician
Salon hair stylist
Salon hair colorist
Salon manager
Editorial stylist
Advertising stylist
Platform artist
Cosmetology instructor
Salon development partner
Theatre or film stylist
And so many more!

Famous Cosmetologists

Cosmetologists can make as much money as they want, as long as they are willing to put in the time, effort, passion and dedication. Here are a few cosmetologists that have worked their way to fame in the industry. You will probably recognize most, if not all, of these names.

Angus Mitchell

Angus is the son of the infamous Paul Mitchell. Both men are successful hair stylists, salon owners and artists. Angus also served as a model for the Mitchell styling line.

John Frieda

Hailing from Britain, John Frieda is a world-famous hairstylist with his own product line. Like Angus, John followed in his father’s footsteps. His father owned a salon. John opened his own salon in London with great success.

Sally Hershberger

Sally is considered one of the most influential hair stylists in the world. Sally attributes her cosmetology education to a friend who suggested that she go to beauty school. She owns her own product line, as well as several salons in New York and L.A.
